The week off for Thanksgiving went quickly, but the quality time with Hannah was something I didn’t realize how much I needed. Although her probing questions made me uncomfortable, they’ve also got me thinking of my future and the authenticity of the dreams I always thought were mine.

The two weeks that follow fly by in similar fashion, classes are done, and holiday break is so close, I can practically smell the turkey in the oven—at least I assume that’s what I’ll eat on Christmas. I guess I won’t know until my plans have been finalized.

“Oh my gosh, listen to this,” Brody says, walking with his hand in mine, both of us a little tipsy—although the bitterly cold air is sobering me up quickly. We’ve been at The Saloon celebrating the end of the semester with our friends, but left Isaiah, Wes, Bree, and a few of her friends behind since the most time we’ve spent together lately was while studying for finals.

Brody’s been refreshing his grades all night waiting for our presentation grade to pop up, since Professor Rhode promised to have them up by the end of the day. He just informed me, rather excitedly, that we earned an A-minus. I don’t know what I’m more proud of—the grade, or the studious monster I created who checks his grades at the bar. “After reprimanding one of you on the first morning of classes, I was worried you two would make for a horror story to tell my future classes—”

I pull his phone in my direction to get a look at the screen. “There is no way he said any of that,” but when I get a good look, I realize he’s been reading our feedback word-for-word. “Wow, okay. Continue.”

“You two made a great team, surprising me with your hard work and commitment,” he turns to me. “Did you hear that? Professor Roadie thinks we make a great team.” He tosses his arm over my shoulders and leans his head against the top of mine. “He knew we’d end up together as well as I did, it seems. Maybe he wasn’t so bad after all.”

“Words I never thought we’d say.”

When we’re a half block from his place, Brody says, “So you still haven’t given me an answer.”

I know exactly what he’s hinting at, but play dumb. “An answer about what?”

Brody pulls me in, chuckling because he knows exactly what I’m doing. He’s already asked me three times this week, but I’ve found a way to change the subject each time. He presses a kiss to the crown of my head, “About Christmas! I’m starting to think you’re scared to be seen with me.”

“Would someone who’s scared to be seen with you do this in public?” I ask, pulling at the collar of his coat until his lips land on mine, kissing him with abandon, right there in the middle of the sidewalk.

Our tongues tangle and I think I’ve finally shut him up until he pulls away, eyes heavy as he looks at me for a long moment before pulling on my hand and we’re walking again.
